The Eternal City of Rome

They call Rome the Eternal City and it’s definitely a favourite with holidaymakers, religious or not. We landed at Leonardo da Vinci, (also known as Fiumicino) Airport and made a bee line for our hotel. We used http://www.inromehotels.com/ and were so pleased with our accommodation which was a stone’s throw away from the Colosseum of Gladiator fame. The area was very lively and welcoming.

Our tour guide, whom we had booked through http://www.inrometoday.it/ took us to the magnificent St Peter’s Square with its Cathedral and the Vatican. We visited the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo confirmed our perception of beautiful art; the timeless Roman Forum which was the commercial, political and religious centre of ancient Rome; we turned our backs to the Trevi fountain and made a wish, then visited the Pantheon; built in 27 BC, and rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in 120 AD. It is one of Rome's best-preserved ancient monuments and has an extraordinary dome; the largest masonry vault ever built.

My favourite night spot was in the lovely Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is the area's heart. We also found a great restaurant through http://www.inrometoday.it/restaurants/index.htm This was definitely an unforgettable holiday and one that I’ll treasure for a long time to come.

Florence

Florence, known as Firenze in Italian, is definitely a fabulous historical and cultural experience. We arrived at the Amerigo Vespucci Airport, located about 3 miles from the centre of Florence and then caught a taxi to our hotel. Our accommodation was conveniently booked with ease through http://www.inflorencehotels.com/ I thoroughly recommend this site as it has a vast choice of reasonably priced hotels. The hotel we chose was wonderfully comfortable and situated in a very picturesque setting within walking distance of the Duomo.

After roaming about on our own for the first day we booked a professional tour guide through http://www.inflorencehotels.com/florence_guides.htm who took us to some very interesting sights: Piazza della Repubblica, the old seat of the Roman Forums; Ponte Vecchio; the Uffizi Building which was projected by Giorgio Vasari; the sombre yet fascinating Pitti Palace with its Gallery of Modern Art and the Garden of Boboli to name but a few. We also visited a number of incredibly beautiful churches and monuments in and around the Cathedral complex.

Getting around Florence on foot was simple as most tourist attractions are in close proximity to each other. We also had a couple of trips on their bus lines A&B, which stopped at all the major points of interest. It’s better not to hire a car as the historical areas can be accessed mainly by public transport or taxi.
Visiting Florence was a worthwhile trip and definitely a memorable holiday.

Passionate about Venice

If you could use one adjective to describe Venice, what would it be? Mine would be passionate! Venetians are passionate about everything from their food to their style and just enjoying life in general. I can’t think of anywhere else where life is lived to the full with such emotion and zest.

We visited Venice during Carnival time and had so much fun dressing up in our costumes. We parked our car at Piazzale Roma, and then made our way by Vaporetto (their water boat) to a fabulous hotel close to St Mark’s Square. Things went very smoothly as we had conveniently booked on-line through www.inVeniceHotels.com The hotel staff were so friendly and made our stay an unforgettable one. They recommended we visit St Mark’s Square, where we experienced some breathtaking views from the Bell Tower; the Rialto Bridge with its colourful market and the Island of Murano where we picked up some great glass pieces. Our friendly tour guide, whom we had booked through www.inVeniceAccommodation.com took us to some very interesting museums and unusual parts of the City.

Some evenings we also ventured into Mestre on the mainland, where they had an excellent choice of beer, wines and spirits. We found some great pubs on the www.inVeniceToday.com site, and made friends with the locals. All in all this was an amazing experience.
